Multiple vials allow for the possibility of multiple usage in the future. Samples are typically stored in at least three individual cryovials. It is expected that physicians will someday be able to amplify a small number of cells, using cell expansion technology to allow for multiple uses of a single sample. CBBC’s method of storage will allow physicians to take advantage of this technology once it becomes available.
Only cryovials protected with a cryosheath have proven long-term storage dependability. Independent studies published in medical journals conclude that long-term cryopreservation of stem cells stored in cryovials yields high recovery rates of viable cells.
CBBC is the only family bank in Canada to use shatter-proof polypropylene cryovials which are hermetically sealed in a cryosheath for additonal sample security. This double containment system is designed specifically to protect samples stored cryogenically by eliminating the possibility of bag breakage in liquid nitrogen. Ask your care manager why this is important.

- Double-Containment system to protect against cross-contamination and for more secured storage.
|
|
Your baby’s cord blood stem cells must withstand long-term storage in a harsh environment. A double-containment system is the best way to protect against the potential risk of cross-contamination and for more secured storage in a harsh environment. Our double-containment system is designed to eliminate the potential risk of cross-contamination during long-term storage. Each cryovial is hermetically sealed in a cryosheath, providing a double-containment system specifically designed to endure long-term storage in liquid nitrogen. The seal also ensures that the family's bar code never detaches from the sample. This double-containment system provides the most secure, long-term cryogenic storage available. The ability to cryosheath the vial as well as the risk of bag breakage in liquid nitrogen are the primary reasons we store the cells in cryovials instead of blood bags.
|
- Triple Identification system to eliminate the possibilty of sample loss
- All samples are identified 3 ways: barcode, family id, and a colour identifier.
- Computer controlled-rate freezing
- Cryovials are computer controlled-rate frozen before being placed in a liquid nitrogen storage unit. This system provides the most secure, long-term cryogenic storage available.
- Storage of your baby’s stem cells in a secure location
- Cbbc’s lab is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada a location historically free from natural disasters (hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc.) that could affect the viability of your sample.
- Secure Equipment to process and store your baby’s cord blood:
- CBBC’s technicians routinely test and certify every critical piece of laboratory equipment on a scheduled basis. Redundant back-up systems include an electric generator as well as an automated reserve liquid nitrogen storage unit.
- CBBC will have the maternal blood sample that you will have collected at birth, tested for the following infectious disease markers by an independent licensed laboratory (Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV 1&2, HTLV 1&2, syphilis, CMV, west nile virus).
- CBBC will receive and process your baby’s cord blood sample meeting and exceeding both Health Canada and AABB guidelines using our unique collection and laboratory processes and protocols which are designed to provide the highest volume collection and best stem cell yield.
- CBBC will process and have your baby's cord blood tested for: cell count, microbiological/sterility, viability, ABO, Rh testing. You will have the option of HLA-typing to determine your baby's cord blood suitability for other family members.
- CBBC will process, store and maintain the collected cord blood at cryogenic temperatures in liquid nitrogen ensuring uniform storage temperatures so that temperature fluctuations are eliminated.
- CBBC will extend its Quality Service Guarantee as a testament to our superior processing and storage facilities.
As a client of cbbc, your baby's sample is backed by our quality service guarantee. If you need to use your baby's cord blood stem cells for transplantation and the cells fail to engraft, you'll receive a refund of all fees paid to CBBC and an additional $50,000**.
